2024 The Third “Dunhuang Award” Chinese Chamber Music and Solo New Works Exhibition and Evaluation Event
Since the first "Dunhuang Award" for Chinese music was successfully held in 2017, it has discovered and promoted a group of newcomers and new works providing a more diverse platform for the display and promotion of new compositions in Chinese music, as well as for professional and non-professional composers.
The second "Dunhuang Award" in 2021 for new works in Chinese chamber music brought forth new voices and expanded the concept of Chinese element music to a broader international audience. The composers participating in the 2021 "Dunhuang Award" included those from major domestic music academies and local orchestras, as well as professional composers, teachers, performers, students, and enthusiasts from the United States, Canada, and Australia. The organizing committee specially invited famous composers and conductors from China and abroad - as well as thirty front-line performers, teachers, composers, conductors, and university professors in Chinese music - to form an expert panel of judges. This professional evaluation group provided objective and rigorous reviews of the listed works.
The third "Dunhuang Award" in 2024 for new works in Chinese chamber music and solo compositions will collect and evaluate works from two creative perspectives: 1) the composers' free creation, and 2) the creation of works with a specified thematic direction. The thematic direction should be based on the musical expression of traditional Chinese literature, drawing creative inspiration from the literary content of “The Book of Songs” or “Tang and Song Poetry.” We encourage composers to make extensive use of Chinese traditional musical elements, to focus more on classic Chinese culture, and extend the innovation of Chinese musical aesthetics and cultural connotations.
